What we do

Occupational Therapists work with people of all ages, focusing on their everyday occupations — the activities we carry out each day, such as going to the toilet, getting into bed, or making breakfast. Sometimes these tasks can become difficult, and this is where your Occupational Therapist (OT) may be able to offer support.

Our Occupational Therapists use a graded approach. This means we encourage as much independence as possible, aiming to help you retain your abilities, maximise your potential, and improve your daily functioning. We may explore a range of strategies including advice, equipment, environmental adaptations, or linking you with other services.

Occupational Therapists are regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). All of our registered Occupational Therapists are licensed to practise in the UK. They are also members of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists, engaging regionally and nationally to promote innovation within the profession.

How we support you

Advice: Your Occupational Therapist may offer guidance on a range of topics, from using equipment you already have to tried‑and‑tested techniques that can support your independence.

Equipment: Your Occupational Therapist may prescribe or recommend equipment to improve access, independence, and safety. Equipment is loaned through our equipment loan service and will include a label identifying the provider and any maintenance arrangements.

Environmental adaptation: Your Occupational Therapist may recommend changes to your home to help you access essential facilities. Adaptations are usually funded through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG), depending on your housing situation. Your Occupational Therapist will explain where your referral has been sent and what to expect next.

Links and signposting: If additional support from other services or professionals is needed, your Occupational Therapist will explain this and provide contact details where available.

Moving and handling: Your Occupational Therapist may identify safer ways for you to move or transfer — for example, getting in and out of a chair. To keep you and your family or carers safe, we may provide advice, equipment, or techniques to support safer movement.erapists, engaging regionally and nationally to promote innovation within the profession.

What can I expect?

After your referral is made, it will be screened to ensure we have all the information needed to support you and to help us prioritise any urgent needs.

You may receive a letter, depending on current waiting times.

One of our Occupational Therapists will contact you as soon as possible. They will introduce themselves and may ask additional questions to help us understand how best to support you.

Your Occupational Therapist will arrange either a face‑to‑face or virtual appointment to carry out your assessment.

During your assessment

The Occupational Therapist may ask questions or gather information about:

  • Your medical history and any treatments. They may also request letters from other professionals involved in your care, such as consultants or therapists.
  • Your height and weight, or other relevant measurements.
  • How you access and use your environment, including how others support you or how you use any existing equipment.
  • Your home environment, including observations of how you move around your home and questions about the people who live with you.
  • Techniques or equipment that you may be asked to try.

Your Occupational Therapist will use the information you provide, along with any observations, to form recommendations. These may include advice, support, or equipment. They may need to speak with you or visit you more than once, and they may need to test any ordered equipment in person.

After your Occupational Therapy assessment, you will receive a letter with key information about your recommendations and if needed, any next steps.
